As I was working on re-purposing this blog from a single theme of the environment to multiple themes of things that spark my interest, I came across a TED video on the danger of a single story. ( I love TED Videos BTW, I will likely comment on a lot of them here.) I thought what a fitting way to restart this blog! In this video Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. I totally agree. That actually applies to ALL aspects of life. From people and culture, to politics and religion and more I have discovered that we often learn just a single story as we grow up and that robs us of a far greater perspective and richness of life. It also robs us of understanding the stories of others, it robs people of dignity. I think the more stories we learn the more fully human we become, the richer our lives are and the more accepting of others we are. I know there are areas in my life where I am still living by a single story, but thankfully my journey isn't over yet, neither is yours. Enjoy this video and I hope you will apply it's lessons to all areas of life, be open to learning new stories.
